Impact of Urbanization on Housing Infrastructure in Abuja Metropolis, Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria

Abstract

Urbanization in Abuja metropolis has been a driving force behind significant changes in the housing infrastructure of the city, irrespective of the master plan, which has been implemented over time. This study examined the effects of urbanization on housing infrastructure in Abuja metropolis. The study utilized a survey research approach through the use of an online monkey survey to generate data from 204 respondents drawn from Garki, Jabi, and Guarimpa in Abuja metropolis. The study findings revealed that rapid and unplanned urbanization occurs in Abuja
metropolis, and the yearly inflow of people into Abuja metropolis is more than what was intended for the city. it was likewise discovered that although the infrastructure in Abuja Metropolis has significantly improved over the last decade with visible expansion of commercial and residential developments in Abuja metropolis, the urbanization of the city was a major cause of its housing problems despite various housing policies put in place and urbanization of Abuja has over time had an adverse effect on housing infrastructure. Therefore, the study recommended that urban
planning needs to be more comprehensive, forward-thinking, and inclusive. Policies that address housing affordability and land allocation should be updated to accommodate the growing population while ensuring adequate infrastructure and services. Also, to cater to the needs of low and middle-income earners, the government, and private developers should prioritize affordable housing projects through public-private partnerships.
