Citizen participation plays a vital role in democratic governance, ensuring transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness in democratic governance. The aim of this research paper is to explore the effects of citizen participation in governance and highlight the opportunities and challenges of citizen participation in governance with special emphasis on the prospects of citizen participation in the Alimosho Local Council Development Area (LCDA). This study adopted survey data, interviews, and policy documents. Results obtained show that citizen
participation in governance was very significant as far as enhancing efficiency in delivering public services is concerned. The study concludes some of the barriers identified include political influence, lack of citizen awareness, bureaucratic processes, and lack of effective communication between government officers and the citizens. Despite these barriers, some potential areas where improvements can be made as far as citizen participation is concerned
have been outlined in the course of this study. Through an analysis of the advantages as well as disadvantages associated with citizen involvement, this study contributes to the existing body of knowledge in the context of local governance and democratic governance in Nigeria.
